Stable renovation

Along with clearing the junk, we also started on cleaning up and renovating the stables. This work was spread out over several months, alongside many other jobs being done, and it all came together in November just before we needed the stables for the horses in the winter.

Testing Mira for size in the stables. She is a BIG horse at 17.1, and although she could fit in there, it was too small to be comfortable or inviting for her, and the stable was horribly dark.
So I started knocking a viewing window between the stables, which helped it feel less claustrophobic immediately
Take down a bit more partition, feeling even better
Going open plan! Knocking two stables plus the old tack room into one large space.
Wow that looks better!
Lots of rotten wood at the bottom of the stables where debris from outside cause damp.
More holes and rotten uprights to be replaced.

Job done
A similar repair was needed at the other end of the stable block, where the outer wall had also bowed out.
Moving the brickwork out to match the bowed stable because the wall itself would not move
Relining the new tack room
This end stable was then turned into a lovely spacious tack room
Lots of recycled storage units very useful to create order out of chaos
Wow that’s a fantastic tack room, space to organise everything and still move!
Relining the open plan stables
Blocking up the redundant doorway
New stable mats adding the final touch
The stable doors were basically sound but with some rotten panels.
This was my attempt at replacing rotten panels.
And with a coat of paint (or two) the stables look like new!
Harley’s field shelter was a later addition, painted to match it looks like it was always there.
Solar lights will make winter easier. That tiny panel should give us 2 hours lighting a day even in winter, which is plenty.
